Overview:
Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) 5 mg is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection used to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. It represents a novel class of medicine that targets both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptors to deliver powerful glycemic control and potential weight loss benefits.
Key Features:
-
Active Ingredient: Tirzepatide
-
Strength: 5 mg/0.5 mL per single-dose prefilled pen
-
Indication: Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults
-
Dosing Schedule: Once weekly
-
Class: Dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist
Clinical Use:
The 5 mg dose is typically the first maintenance dose following the initial 2.5 mg starter dose. Patients usually transition to 5 mg after 4 weeks on 2.5 mg. Based on clinical response and tolerability, the dose can later be titrated to higher strengths (7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, or 15 mg).
Mechanism of Action:
Tirzepatide mimics two natural incretin hormones (GIP and GLP-1), enhancing insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon, slowing gastric emptying, and reducing appetite. These combined actions support better glucose control and can promote weight loss.
Administration Instructions:
-
Administer subcutaneously in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm
-
Inject once weekly, on the same day each week, with or without food
-
If a dose is missed, take it within 4 days (96 hours); otherwise, skip and resume on the next scheduled day
Benefits:
-
Dual-target action for improved glycemic control
-
Proven reductions in HbA1c and body weight
-
Easy-to-use, single-dose prefilled pen
-
Convenient once-weekly dosing
-
Can be used as monotherapy or with other diabetes medications (excluding other GLP-1 RAs)
